Learn to Swim

Largs Bay Swim Centre is dedicated to providing a range of group learning and developmental classes catering for all ages and abilities from 2 months to adults. Our lessons are skilled based, with an emphasis on progressive learning experiences from building water confidence, correct stroke technique and survival skills.

Our instructors are fully accredited, combining technical knowledge and the ability to communicate to all ages, and have a caring, emphatic and inclusive approach to teaching.

The Stingrays class is where the bubbles, arms and breathing (basic freestyle) is taught, along with backstroke arms. To move up to the Stingrays class, children must be able to swim 10m freestyle and 10m backstroke.

jellyfish

4 years old and up

The Jellyfish class is where the children begin our Learn to Swim Program. Children move from Duckies to Jellyfish at 4 years of age. The focus is to get children comforatble with having their faced in the water, floating and gliding and the learning of kicking correctly.

waterbabies

Approx 4 months - 2.5 years of age

The Waterbabies classes are designed to teach water familiarisation to babies from 4months of age, combined with having fun and getting the children comfortable in the water without a parent. At two and a half years we look at moving children to the Duckies class.

duckies

Approx 2.5 years - 4 years of age

The Duckies class is the first class without a parent in the water. Instructors teach the children water familiarization with the aid of a flotation device. The children are also taught to submerge, and are introduced to the kicking action. To proceed from the Duckies class to the Jellyfish class, children must be able to float on their back and stomach for 10 seconds unaided, and should be able to swim approximately 4m unaided

starfish

The Starfish class is where the children are taught how to kick correctly on their front and back. To move up to the Stingrays class, children must be able to do a 5 metre torpedo on their front without stopping and must be able to kick on their back with a board.

stingrays

The Stingrays class is where the bubbles arm and breathing (basic freestyle) is taught. Backstroke with arms is also taught in the Stingrays class. To move up to the Dolphins class, children must be able to do a full lap of freestyle and a full lap of backstroke in the Stingrays lane.

dolphins

The Dolphins class is held in the deep end, but is only a small step up from the Stingrays. The lane is slightly longer and now the children are taught how to breath bilaterally (both sides) which is the way they will perform freestyle (with bilateral breathing) and backstroke in the dolphins lane.

sharks

In the Sharks class the children further develop the Freestyle and Backstroke techniques.The frog – kick is now introduced which is the basis on which the Breaststroke technique is built. Diving is also introduced to the children in this class. For the children to move up to the Junior Squad class, their Freestyle and Backstroke must be of a high standard and they must be able to do frog – kick efficiently and effectively while swimming full laps of the pool with great efficiency in the Freestyle and Backstroke.

junior squad

-

Junior Squad is the last class before your child moves into the Squad Program. In the Junior Squad, the swimmers refine their Freestyle, Backstroke  and Breaststroke techniques and are taught Butterfly, fins are recommended for this class to aid in developing their butterfly. To move into Bronze Squad, swimmers should know how to swim Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly with good technique and efficiency in each stroke, as well as being competent at diving and tumble turns.
